The new floor on bag fees

JetBlue customers will now pay at least $50 per checked bag, a 28% jump from the lowest fee the airline previously charged. [1] The airline raised its bag fees on Tuesday, November 3, for the second time in 2026. [1]

JetBlue is the first U.S. airline to raise baggage fees twice this year. [2] This piece covers the new prices, the reasons given and what you can do about them.

The new prices

During peak periods, checked bags will cost $55, up from $49. [2] Passengers who do not pre-pay for a bag will pay $60 for their first checked bag. [1]

Timing matters too. Economy bags checked within 24 hours of departure will cost $60, and a bag checked less than 24 hours before departure will cost $70. [2]

The second checked bag costs $70 off-peak ($75 if not pre-paid), up from $59 ($69 previously). [1] At peak it is $75 ($85 if not pre-paid), up from $69 ($79 previously). [1]

JetBlue uses a dynamic baggage-pricing system, so flyers pay more for checked bags on peak travel days. [1] The airline's peak baggage fee days apply through October 2027. [1]

Why JetBlue says it is raising fees

JetBlue pointed to rising fuel and operating costs in its statement on the fee hike. [1] The increase comes as surging fuel costs wipe out much of the airline industry's profits. [2]

A JetBlue spokesperson said the fees help keep base fares competitive while letting customers pay for a checked bag only if they need one. [1]

How the industry got here

JetBlue raised its checked bag fees earlier in 2026 and started a wave of fee hikes across the industry. [1] United followed, then Delta, American and Southwest. [1]

After JetBlue raised bag fees in late March, nearly every major U.S. carrier followed with its own hikes within weeks. [1] Bag fees typically do not come back down once they go up. [1]

What it means for you

The new fees apply to flights booked starting November 3. [1] Flights booked before November 3, including holiday trips, are subject to the previous fees. [1]

If you do not pre-pay, your first checked bag costs $60. [1] Some travelers still avoid the fee: Mosaic elite status members each get at least one free bag, and certain cobranded credit cards still offer free baggage. [1]

Passengers in the Mint cabin remain entitled to their first bag free. [1] The new domestic first-class (BlueFirst) seats, which get the same first-bag benefit, are set to debut on some flights next month. [1]

Blue Basic (basic economy) passengers may now use the overhead bins with a full-size carry-on bag. [1]
