## What happened in Cambodia

Villa Vie Residences suddenly halted operations of its ship, giving residents just hours of notice and disembarking them in Cambodia. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) Some 200 passengers, including a cancer patient, were left homeless and stranded. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/)

The cruise came to an end on October 27, 2026, when the company suspended operations citing an increase in fuel costs. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) This piece covers what residents paid, why the company says it stopped and what the people on board can check now.

According to Cambodian officials, the ship has a capacity of 650 and was carrying 203 passengers, mostly Americans, and 156 crew members. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/)

## What residents paid

Permanent residency on the ship cost $120K to $440K depending on cabin type. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) Residents also paid monthly fees of $5K to $9K, based on double occupancy. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/)

The monthly fee was meant to cover three meals per day, drinks, Starlink Wi-Fi, fuel, port fees, and basic medical care. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) Jim and Chris Guld, for example, paid $170,000 for a 15-year cabin plus $5,000 per month. ## Why the fuel bill broke the model

Villa Vie said its fuel costs have quadrupled since the war in Iran began. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/) It said surging costs were driven by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/)

Average monthly fuel costs per cabin rose from $1.8K in the past to $6K to $8K in recent months. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) The company was paying a $3 million fuel bill per month for the MV Odyssey. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/)

An effort was made to slow the itinerary and reduce the pace of movement to lower fuel burn, but it was not enough. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) Founder Mikael Petterson said the company proposed residents pay an extra $500 a month plus a fuel surcharge, and residents scoffed at the request. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/)

The company had also run out of cash. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) Passengers Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin said they were repeatedly told before the stop that the company was running out of cash and hoped investors would bail it out. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/)

## How the project got here

Villa Vie bought the ship in 2023, and the concept launched in 2024 with more than 70% of cabins reportedly sold at launch. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) The launch was delayed because the old ship required more work than expected. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/)

The MV Odyssey originally departed Belfast in October 2024 after a four-month delay. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/) Villa Vie announced plans to launch a second ship just months before the suspension, despite elevated fuel prices. ## What it means for you

If you were a resident, the company said it would not pay for passengers' travel from Cambodia. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/) Getting home is therefore your own cost.

Some residents are making their own plans. Randy Cassingham, a cruise blogger receiving cancer treatments, said he decided to travel to Thailand to be with his doctors again. [[2]](https://nypost.com/2026/10/28/world-news/hundreds-of-cruise-passengers-left-stranded-in-cambodia/)

If you hold a cabin or are watching the company's next step, two developments are on the table. The company is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. [[1]](https://onemileatatime.com/news/lifetime-residency-cruise-ship-runs-out-of-money-forces-residents-off-cambodia/) It is also considering a financial restructuring and seeking new funding over the next 60 days, according to Bloomberg.
