China Eastern ex-chairman Liu Shaoyong gets 14 years for bribery: what the court found
The former head of one of China's biggest airlines took more than $10 million in bribes over two decades, and the court tied them to contracts, aircraft leasing and flight routes.

The sentence
Liu Shaoyong, former chairman and Party secretary of China Eastern Airlines Holding Co, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for bribery. [1] He was convicted of accepting more than 67.5 million yuan ($10.1 million) in bribes over two decades. [1]
The Shenyang Intermediate People's Court in Liaoning province handed down the sentence. [1] It ordered Liu to pay a fine of $600K. [2]
The court also ordered confiscation of his illicit gains and any proceeds derived from them, to be turned over to the State treasury. [1] It ruled that his conduct was the crime of accepting bribes involving an exceptionally large amount. [1]
What the court found
The court found that between 2002 and 2023, Liu abused his position at the airline to help companies and individuals in business operations, project contracts and flight route management. [2] His abuse of positions covered major Chinese airlines, including China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines, and he sought benefits in exchange for bribes. [1]
Disciplinary authorities said Liu helped others secure project contracts, manage flight operations and arrange aircraft leasing in exchange for substantial payments. [1] He was also found to have improperly accepted gifts and entertainment and to have used his influence to benefit his relatives' business activities. [1]
Why the sentence was lighter
The court said the sentence was lighter than it could have been because of mitigating circumstances. [2] These include his confession, voluntary disclosure of previously unknown offenses, and expression of remorse and cooperation in recovering illicit gains. [2]
Another mitigating factor was that some attempted bribes had not been successful. [1] Liu pleaded guilty, expressed remorse and actively returned his illicit gains, and the court said all assets involved and their proceeds have been recovered. [1]
Who Liu is and how the case unfolded
Liu is 68 and a native of Henan province. [1] He spent much of his career in China's civil aviation industry, with senior positions at the aviation regulator, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines. [1]
He became chairman and Party secretary of China Eastern Airlines Holding Co in late 2016 and stepped down in July 2022. [1] In June 2025, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the National Commission of Supervision placed him under investigation for violations of party discipline and state laws. [2]
In January 2026, he was expelled from the Communist Party of China after investigators found he had abused his authority for personal gain. [2] Prosecutors indicted him on bribery charges in May. [1]
The case was heard in public in July. [1] Prosecutors presented evidence, while Liu and his defense counsel challenged the evidence and presented their arguments. [1]
What it means for airline travelers
If you follow Chinese aviation, the case involves two airlines you may know, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines. [1] The court found the bribes were tied to business operations, project contracts and flight route management. [2]
The court said all assets involved in the case and their proceeds have been recovered. [1] The case is part of China's anti-corruption campaign, which targets officials at various levels, including executives of state-owned enterprises. [2]
